It really doesn’t feel good to be stuck in a job you don’t enjoy. It also isn’t fun reporting to a manager that you don’t respect or get on with. Many of us have been in this situation or sadly, still are.
If however, you’re at the point where you know that you’re not in the right place career-wise then great! You deserve more, you’re capable of more and you can and will get there!
The good news is that the job that you have can be changed for a better one however, you need to believe that it’s possible to achieve your goal of finding happiness at work. After all, thinking that ‘it’s not really that bad’, that ‘tomorrow will be better’ or even ‘it could be worse’ isn’t going to help you in any way at all.
So how do you start the process of upgrading your career?
- Believe in yourself. You can and you will find your ideal job – it’s out there but you’ve got to be honest about what your skills and experience is best suited to. You also need to put a value on yourself and think about what sort of income you need. That’ll certainly help to steer you in the right direction.
- Don’t rush. If you want to be in a happy place then it’s worth taking your time to get there and ensuring that you’ve got just what you want. Don’t pressure yourself into jumping ship just so that you’re in a different job as that won’t necessarily help you in the long run. Instead, think carefully about what you really want.
- Plan, plan, plan. This is important stuff so make sure that you’ve put time aside to work out exactly what it is you’re looking for and, where you’re going to find it. Having a system in place that helps you to keep track of applications sent, interviews you’ve been invited to, the names of contacts that are useful along the way and so on, will ultimately save you time and reduce the pressure.
